The Magic Millions dominated racing on Saturday, while at Flemington, a WA mare continued her winning ways and potentially earned herself a crack at a Group l. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Waller Ticks Big Race 2YO Box

Chris Waller is used to overcoming a challenge and proving critics wrong. His big knock over the years has been his stable not producing big race juvenile winners. That all changed on Saturday at the Gold Coast when his colt Shaquero gave his rivals a galloping lesson in taking out the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Teaming up with Hugh Bowman, the youngster was never getting beat from the home turn onwards and on the line was dominant.

Magic Millions Redemption For Aim

Aim started favourite in the 2YO Classic last year and failed, and really since then, he has failed to fire a shot, but he bounced back in a big way at the Gold Coast on Saturday with an outstanding win in the Magic Millions Guineas. J Mac gave him a perfect ride in transit and he got better as the race went on. Isotope was a well supported favourite but clipped heels at the top of the straight and dumped jockey Ryan Maloney.

Fabulous Fabergino Wins Again

Speedy WA mare Fabergino continued her love affair with the Flemington straight and 1000m, winning the Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday in leading throughout, carrying 60kg and proving too nippy for her rivals. That win has nearly assured her the warrant to have a crack at the Group l Black Caviar Lightning in a few weeks where she will take on the likes of Nature Strip and September Run.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

Have to give a nod to Hugh Bowman. He has admitted himself that post Winx, his riding hasn’t been great, whether it be due to physical or mental reasons. Add onto that the nasty fall midway through last year at Rosehill that caused Andrew Atkins to be hospitalised. But Bowman is a champion rider and he proved it with a 12/10 aboard Shaquero in the Classic. Hopefully that will kick off a bumper 2021 for the hoop.

DEBUT OF THE WEEK:

Was hard to ignore Remarque and his win at Rosehill. Still looked a bit raw and new to the racing caper but he moves like a good horse, as was evident in the trials, and he was strong in winning, stamping himself as a legitimate Golden Slipper contender. Will be fascinating to see where he goes to next.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

Self interest because I was on, but it was a lovely ride from Damien Thornton aboard Senor Toba on Friday night at the Valley. Could have waited, but he saw a couple of key rivals seemingly going nowhere and held up, so he went around, built up the revs and he was strong to the line in winning. His ride also on Outlandos at Wangaratta on Sunday was a beauty as well.

SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:

Couple I want to mention. Self interest again, but Jordan Childs aboard Astronomicelle at the Valley on Friday night was ugly viewing. Had ample opportunity to come wider and into clear air I felt, but instead was probing for a narrow split, and it just didn’t eventuate til it was all over. Had she got clear earlier, I think she wins. But Matty McGillivray aboard Ballistic Boy was a howler. Jumped well, but immediately restrained for cover and the horse was then caught wide no cover. Ugly, ugly viewing.

HORSES TO FOLLOW:

Dominarcher – Good thing if they drop him back to a provincial maiden
Pandemic – Was really surprised by the weight of support. 1200m back to 1000m hardly ever works. Good in defeat
Long Arm – He just wants 2400m+

ONE MORE CHANCE:

Swift Witness – Just didn’t look herself at all. She can come back to Sydney for the Golden Slipper and run well
Forbidden Love – Not the greatest of steers. Prepared to forgive her
Swift Sure – Pulled up lame so forgive
Terbium – Not sure the straight track suited him

NEVER EVER AGAIN:

Frosty Rocks – Hard to place now with his rating, and he looks a tired horse
The Bopper – Was first up and his GF is in a few weeks time…still very disappointing
