A couple of nasty falls marred a great day of racing at Randwick, an upset in a feature at the Valley while the Victorian industry lost one of their own. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Carnage At Randwick

The talk should be about Mo’Unga turning from a boy to a man, Verry Elleegant producing an amazing performance and a slashing Melbourne Cup kick off run from She’s Ideel. But the meeting was marred by a couple of nasty falls, firstly Brenton Avdulla aboard Xtremetime in the Silver Shadow (1200m) while Rachel King and Brandenburg came down in the feature, the Winx Stakes (1400m). Both riders are okay but unfortunately both horses couldn’t be saved.

Exceptionally Rough Result In McKenzie

The McKenzie Stakes (1200m) looked as if it would be a two horse race between Jigsaw and Hilal. But that thought was thrown out the window, with Jigsaw taking charge of Ben Melham, producing very fast splits in front, leaving himself a sitting shot, and outsider He’s Exceptional took advantage, wearing them down to win at a massive price. Hilal was most disappointing while Jigsaw did a remarkable job to hang on.

RIP Ricky Thurgood

The Victorian racing industry lost one of their own this week with the passing of Elvis ‘Ricky’ Thurgood. Thurgood came here from Sri Lanka in 1969 and established himself as a decent rider in the Victorian ranks, but suffered a horrendous fall in the 1980 Easter Cup at Caulfield, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury and extreme physical deficits. Doctors said he would only last weeks, months at best. But he amazingly lived for 41 years.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

Private Eye keeps getting underestimated and he continues to keep getting the job done. Big win from him in the Show County and really finished his race off with purpose. Options aplenty for this guy, whether it be an Epsom or aim higher and have a crack at the Golden Eagle.

DEBUT OF THE WEEK:

Zouzarella was a significant drifter in betting on debut at the Valley on Saturday and the believers who waited patiently were rewarded because she got out to $7+, and it was an impressive win in solid time. How far she can go, not sure, but the win was full of merit and she has stamped herself to contest the better races.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

One thing I love seeing is initiative. It’s rarely seen when racing in Brisbane, but Taylor Marshall changed that on Saturday at Eagle Farm with a peach on Je Suis Belle. It was a tricky gate for her, and she could have snagged back, but she jumped well, was ridden positively to get outside the speed and the race was over 400m out. Dominant win, but a sweet steer.

SLAUGHTER OF THE WEEK:

I have no doubt that Jacob Opperman will make it as a rider. But like every rider, they go through a form slump and this guy is indeed having one, winning five of his last 50 rides, and some of his steers at Morphettville were horrendously negative and gave his respective mounts on a couple of occasions no chance. Still claims 2kg in town, and that will disappear before too long, but a couple of steers were ordinary, namely Capricorn Ridge and Bones.

HORSES TO FOLLOW:

Four Moves Ahead – She’ll improve big time for that run
She’s Ideel – I still think the overseas raiders will dominate the Melbourne Cup. But she might be #1 seed for the locals
Think It Over- If Avdulla rides, I think he wins. Just needed a proper big race/proven metro rider
Front Page – Market said she had three legs. Ran very well considering
Just As Soon – I think she wins with clear air at the right time. She’s flying

ONE MORE CHANCE:

Trifaccia – Not sacking…yet, but it’s close

NEVER EVER AGAIN:

Malicorne – Soft lead and she found nothing. She’s in trouble
Hilal – Race was set up for him but gee he was plain. Jury well and truly out
Dick Whittington – This import looks very limited
Livingstone Falls – Had every chance but a very plain finale
