Retiring Sunshine Coast Turf Club chief executive Mick Sullivan believes the club can become one of the most powerful in Australia in coming years.

Sullivan will oversee his 18th and final Caloundra Cup meeting at Corbould Park on Saturday.

He joined the cub in February 2000 and will retire next month.

Sullivan, who turns 65 in two weeks, will be replaced by John Miller, formerly the boss at Albury.

“I have had a wonderful journey at the Sunshine Coast but I felt it was time to hand the reins to someone a bit younger,” Sullivan said.

“It’s going to be a nostalgic day on Saturday but I can look back on making so many friends and acquaintances in racing.”

Sullivan said he was especially proud to see the club become entrenched as the Queensland’s No.1 Sunday club, the introduction of night racing and Caloundra being established as a Saturday metropolitan standard venue.

“The fact we now have more than 400 horses in work here with some of the state’s top trainers based here is also a feather in the club’s cap,” he said.

“A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work here and it was a pleasure to do my bit.”

Sullivan said the future was limitless for the club.

“There are thousands of new homes being built around the track and we have things in place to take advantage of it. There is no reason the club can’t climb to be among the top in the nation,” he said.
