Chris Waller Chris Waller has 3 runners in Saturday's Spring Champion Stakes

Tumultuous is the least fancied of the Chris Waller-trained trio in the Spring Champion Stakes but the one with the pedigree to go the distance.

While much of Waller’s focus on Saturday will be on champion Winx in her tactical battle in a three-horse Caulfield Stakes, he will keep an eye on Randwick where Tumultuous, High Mist and Veladero put their staying credentials on the line.

Yankee Rose is the $2.50 favourite for the Group One feature over 2000 metres in which she will bid to become the first filly to win the race.

Tumultuous is at $17 with High Mist a $9.50 chance and Veladero at $11.

Veladero won the traditional lead-up, the Gloaming Stakes (1800m) with Tumultuous fifth and High Mist seventh.

“I think Tumultuous is the one who is bred to run the distance and can improve,” Waller said.

“There is a lot of upside to him over 2000 metres and maybe beyond.”

Tumultuous is by Fastnet Rock out of Boisterous Lady who has produced 2007 AJC Oaks winner Rena’s Lady and tough stayer Vatuvei, a winner over 2800m on the flat and four races at 3200m and beyond over jumps.

All three of the Waller stable’s horses are entered for the Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 29.

The last Spring Champion Stakes winner to claim the double was the Mike Moroney-trained Monaco Consul in 2009.

The 2004 Spring Champion winner Savabeel went on to win the Cox Plate as a three-year-old, one of the options for Yankee Rose.

Trainer David Vandyke has enlisted Dean Yendall to help her cause with a view to the lightweight Victorian jockey riding her in the Cox Plate if she measures up over 2000 metres.

“If she wins on Saturday we go to the Cox Plate,” Vandyke said.

Yankee Rose is backing up from her second to Global Glamour in last Saturday’s Group One Flight Stakes (1600m).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Global Glamour is the $4 second favourite behind the Waller-trained Foxplay for Saturday’s Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
