When you open your form guides tomorrow and scan through the Swan Hill fields, you’re going to see a name you’re not familiar with.
It’s Martin Harley.
BUT….do not in any way be put off by that.
This is an Irish-born lad who is one of Europe’s finest.
He has 4 rides for Team Hayes & Dabernig at Swan Hill and he could very well land a double.
He has won at Gr 1 level in England, landing the Kings Stand Stakes a few years back, and when he accepted a licence to ride in Hong Kong earlier this year, he won there too.
In fact, his first ride was at Happy Valley and he rode an 87/1 outsider. He landed the prize so he’s rather hoping at Swan Hill his first mount can do the same.
It comes up in the first race of the day on an unraced 3YO named TOTALITY.
It’s drawn gate 3 and market watch is the best guide, as it hasn’t trialled, but Harley does get a very, very good chance to land his debut Aussie winner at his next ride. That’s in race 3 on the well-bred 4YO mare CARAVAN (Snitzel-Gypsy Robin).
She was a good closing 3rd when resuming last start and gets a perfect gate here plus an extra 200m to work with.
Harley looks to get her home late after enjoying a cushy run on the inside.
It wont take long for punters and fellow trainers to find out how good this boy is.
He’ll have rides coming out of his ears before too long.
In fact, he gets his first taste of Aussie stakes racing at Flemington on Saturday when he mounts NEIDORP for trainer Tony Gollan in the Listed Cap D’Antibes over 1100m.
