Victorian mare Srikandi has completed a Queensland Group One double, winning the Tattersall’s Tiara at the Gold Coast.
Two weeks after claiming the $2 million Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben, Srikandi has made her own luck on the way to beating Avoid Lightning and Lumosty in the $500,000 race for fillies and mares.
On a rain-affected track, Srikandi was sent forward from a wide barrier by jockey Kerrin McEvoy and she took up the running as the field settled into formation in the 1400m race.
She was able to pinch a break on the turn and held off a determined bid from Avoid Lightning.
They finished well ahead of Lumosty who just kept the minor placing from Bound For Earth.
“She’s a little gem,” McEvoy said.
“She travelled so well and got through that ground lovely which her form said she does.”
