Connections of classy galloper Bel Sprinter expect him to show his true ability when he makes his return to racing at Caulfield.
The seven-year-old, a recent Cranbourne barrier trial winner, is down to run in the Group Two Saturday’s Caulfield Sprint over 1100m.
Prepared by Jason Warren, Bel Sprinter underwent his second wind operation following his last start 10th in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville in May.
Assistant trainer Mitchell Beer believes the gelding is going as well as ever following the surgery.
Bel Sprinter won the Group One Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick in March 2013 before finishing third to Black Caviar in the TJ Smith at Randwick a fortnight later.
He followed that with a second to Lucky Nine in the KrisFlyer International Sprint in Singapore in May.
However a tough stint in quarantine and the lack of a suitable spell counted against Bel Sprinter last spring before wet tracks thwarted him in the autumn.
Beer said Bel Sprinter’s breathing this campaign had improved greatly following the operation and it would not cause him any problems on Saturday.
“It was a pretty minor job,” Beer said.
“He had his first one a while ago and towards the end of last preparation his breathing just started to deteriorate.”
Beer said Bel Sprinter’s form last campaign was not as bad as it seemed.
After a first-up fourth in the Challenge Stakes at Randwick on March 15, the gelding then struck a series of heavy tracks in Sydney before the decision was made to bring him home and tackle The Goodwood in Adelaide.
“When you have a rating as high as his you would prefer to scratch instead of racing on heavy tracks,” Beer said.
“But it’s hard to as there just isn’t the races available, otherwise you end up carrying big weights.
“We ended up coming home from Sydney and decided to tackle the Goodwood and ended up getting a wet track over there as well.”
Beer said Ben Melham, who rode Bel Sprinter early in his career to six victories from 11 rides, was reunited with the sprinter in his trial victory on October 6 and was likely to have the mount on Saturday.
