John Thompson has learned from Nechita’s Golden Rose defeat and has faith in the filly’s ability to bounce back in a big way in Saturday’s Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Nechita went into the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) as the $2.50 favourite but after sprinting to the front early in the straight, she was overhauled and finished sixth.

Thompson said that performance didn’t make him question the filly’s talent but did make him consider how far she’s going to run.

“She looks like a sprinter and is a good sprinter and will reach the top level, no doubt in my mind,” Thompson said.

“But to get to 1400 metres and a mile I think we’d have to ride her quieter.”

Nechita has overcome an injury setback from that race on September 15 and is one of Thompson’s two “big guns” heading to Derby Day features at Flemington.

Group One winning-stablemate Pear Tart will take aim in the Myer Classic (1600m).

Nechita suffered a cut to her right front leg in the Golden Rose which required four stitches and treatment for a week before she went to the paddock for 10 days to recuperate.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock will have a jump-out at Flemington on Tuesday in readiness for the Group One Coolmore (1200m).

“She has been down here (in Melbourne) about three weeks and looks amazing,” Thompson said.

“You can still see the scar there but it has not worried her at all and she hasn’t missed a beat since we started working her again.

“The jumpout on Tuesday will just top her off nicely.

“There’s plenty of good horses in it but I think she’s up to it.”

Thompson said the Golden Rose, won by Epaulette, was “definitely disappointing” but said the way the race was run “buggered us up”.

“We were positive out of the gates and it was a high-pressure race,” he said.

“It just set it up for the backmarkers and you just don’t know how much being galloped on affected her.”

Tattersall’s Tiara winner Pear Tart was second to Streama in the Tristarc Stakes (1400m) last start and Thompson says the mare has come on.

“The Myer will be her third run in, she’s had the run the Melbourne way and she’ll improve off that,” Thompson said.

“If the others haven’t improved off that, I know she has.”

Christian Reith will ride both Nechita and Pear Tart.
