Spirit Of Boom’s army of owners are hoping the Group Two Caulfield Sprint is a breakthrough race for the talented sprinter.

In spite of winning almost $1.1 million in prize money in a career stretching back to 2009, Spirit Of Boom has been a frustration to train because of his failure to win a race above Listed status.

He’s come close plenty of times, the most recent a three-quarter length second to Platelet – whom he meets again at Caulfield – in the Group Two Gilgai Stakes at Flemington on October 5.

Last year at Flemington the Toowoomba sprinter was second in the Group Two Yellowglen Stakes and second in the Group Three Bobbie Lewis Stakes.

“He’s been racing at a high level for quite a few years and is still very competitive so we’re hoping he can break through for a well-deserved Group win on Saturday,” trainer Tony Gollan said.

This will only be Spirit Of Boom’s second visit to Caulfield on Saturday after an autumn appearance where he was beaten into third by Mrs Onassis in the Group One Oakleigh Plate.

Gollan said a large group of owners are making the trip from Queensland to cheer their boy on in the 1100m sprint but the trainer admits he’ll be shouting the loudest if Spirit Of Boom can win.

“He’s been knocking on the door to win a feature race and we would like nothing more than for him to win because he’s been deserved of one,” said Gollan.

Spirit Of Boom will continue his spring campaign in the Yellowglen Stakes at Flemington on November 2 where he will try to go one better than last year.

He will then go to Perth for the Winterbottom Stakes, a Group One race where he was beaten by a neck into third place in 2012.
