Daniel Bowman is giving Roddandtodd his chance to chase some decent prize money in a planned two-run winter campaign

Trainer Daniel Bowman is giving Roddandtodd his chance to chase some decent prize money in a planned two-run winter campaign before the sprinter turns four.

Roddandtodd has won two of his five starts and resumes in Saturday’s $120,000 Ron Taylor Handicap (1000m) at Flemington for three-year-olds with Bowman expecting a bold showing.

The gelding was fourth in the Inglis Dash (1100m) at Flemington in January, getting within three lengths of highly talented sprinter Nature Strip, in his only previous Flemington start.

“He showed that he can handle the straight when he ran really well in probably a much tougher race than this,” Bowman said.

“In saying that he was third-up then and tomorrow he’s first-up.”

But Bowman said, given he only plans to give Roddandtodd two winter starts, the gelding had done enough work after a freshen-up to be forward enough to run well first-up.

“Obviously he’ll take a little bit of improvement out of it, being first-up, but I’d expect him to hopefully finish in the top four,” he said.

After his fourth in the Inglis Dash, Roddandtodd claimed the second win of his career at his fifth start when he dominated a 955m benchmark 70 at Moonee Valley in February before a break.

Longer term, Bowman is keen to target more 955m races at Moonee Valley during the spring/summer night racing season.

“I think that’s his go,” he said.

Saturday’s race is a heat of the Creswick Series for three-year-olds but Bowman indicated the Listed final next month over 1200m was an unlikely target, believing he’s better suited over shorter distances.

“We’ll probably just see how he goes tomorrow and then he’ll either go to another heat in a couple of weeks over 1100 at Flemington or go to Adelaide for a benchmark 90 over 1000 metres then off to the paddock,” he said.

“It’s more just having a bite at the good prize money for three-year-olds late in the season before he turns four.”
