One-time Magic Millions favourite Sheer Style has put on a classy display to leave a group of less experienced two-year-olds in her wake at Randwick.
The Garry Frazer-trained filly jumped straight to the front and was never threatened in Monday’s TAB Rewards (1000m), justifying her odds-on starting price on the slow track.
With Claire Nutman’s three kilogram claim reducing her weight to 55.5kg, Sheer Style ($1.70) had 3-1/2 lengths on Good Project ($26) on the line.
The winner of the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic on a heavy Ballarat track in November, Sheer Style’s bid for the $2 million Gold Coast race in January was thwarted when she drew the outside barrier and finished with the tail enders.
Sheer Style has finished in the first three in the other five of her six starts with Monday’s win her second. She also boasts a second to subsequent Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake.
“She is much more relaxed this time and I think we may be able to get her to sit off the speed,” Frazer said.
At the other end of the distance scale, fellow two-year-old Candelara prompted thoughts of future Classics with her all-the-way win in the Significant Prelude (1800m).
Sent out at $1.50, the filly romped home by 3-3/4 lengths over Still The Same ($7).
Trainer Bjorn Baker said he was not sure if she would contest the Significant Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill on June 28 with the race open to two and three-year-olds.
“We will have a look at it but I think she may be an Oaks horse in time,” he said.
“We need to decide whether to give her a break now with that in mind.”
Majorly is one who will be going to the Rosehill race after winning Monday’s 1800m race for three-year-olds.
Unlike the previous two winners, Majorly ($41) came out of the pack along the rail under Damien Thornton to beat Off The Rails ($5) by three-quarters of a length with the same margin to favourite Pajaro ($3.60).
The winner of a 2600m race at Gosford on April 6, Majorly failed in the VRC St Leger on Anzac Day when he beat just one other runner and was found to have mucus in his lungs.
“He recovered and trialled well behind Red Tracer and will go to the distance race at Rosehill,” trainer Gerald Ryan said.
