Gary Portelli will give dual Group One winner She Will Reign a race day gallop

Trainer Gary Portelli will give dual Group One winner She Will Reign a race day gallop rather than a second barrier trial ahead of her return in the $250,000 Inglis Sprint.

Last year’s Golden Slipper and Moir Stakes winner trialled well under her own steam at Warwick Farm last Monday to finish second to the speedy Super Too over 800m.

Portelli had pencilled in a second barrier trial next Monday but instead will take the filly to Rosehill on Saturday.

“She’s ticking away exactly where we expect a horse of her ability to be at,” Portelli said.

“You’d expect her to trial the way she trialled. Obviously if she had trialled worse than that I would have been worried, but she did exactly what we wanted her to.

“She’s probably just going to have a gallop between races on Saturday at Rosehill rather than having a barrier trial next Monday.

“It’s just to get her to the track again for a nice gallop and then she’ll race at Warwick Farm on the 10th (in the Inglis Sprint).

“If she races well there she’ll head to Melbourne for the Oakleigh Plate.”

The Inglis Sprint (1100m) on February 10 is two weeks before the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.

Portelli said the reason for giving her a gallop instead of a second trial was to keep her fresh for the Warwick Farm race.

“Two trials might just have the edge off her a bit,” he said.

“You’ve got to come out running at Warwick Farm. You can’t come from a long way back and win, no matter what the opposition is, with the shorter straight.

“I reckon over 1100 at Warwick Farm, you probably just want to be travelling comfortably not too far off the pace.”
