Promising filly Schemel has had a change of luck and earned herself a chance at stakes company with victory at the Gold Coast.

Schemel ($4) gave jockey Glen Colless the second leg of winning double when she strolled home to win Wednesday’s 3YO Plate (1400m).

Trainer Bryan Guy said Schemel had been unlucky at her previous two starts when third at the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

“Paul Hammersley rode her at the Sunshine Coast got off and said she should have won. She should have broken her maiden status before this,” Guy said.

“I think I will throw her in the deep end in the Gold Coast Bracelet on Saturday week. She should love the 1800 metres of that race and I will just see how she comes up after today.”

Hammersley was to ride Schemel but he was a late scratching after his wife Beck gave birth to their daughter on Tuesday.

He will be able to ride Guy’s Queensland Derby hopeful Eagle Way at Doomben on Saturday.

Beck’s father, trainer Bruce Hill, had a double reason to celebrate when Toronto Flyer ($17) won the other heat of the maiden.

Hill said he expected Toronto Star, who was ridden by Colless, to work his way through the grades.

Fellow trainer Eric Singh rued Matt McGillivray’s impending move to Sydney after the apprentice won the Benchmark 65 (1800m) on Qabla.

McGillivary joins John Sargent’s stable on Sunday.

“It is a great time to head to Sydney with my two kilo claim when the big name jockeys are coming up here,” McGillivray said.
