The Caulfield Guineas features in the future plans for well bred colt Star Of Monsoon, but first he needs to get a win on the board.

Trainer Gerald Ryan hopes that will come as soon as Wednesday at Canterbury where he runs in the 1200 metre-maiden for two-year-olds.

The colt has had two starts, running fourth on debut in the Canonbury Stakes in January before a close third in a maiden at Canterbury won by Kiss And Make Up who went on to win the Group Two Todman Stakes.

Star Of Monsoon is the $5 second favourite for his return behind another Lonhro colt, Godolphin’s Saxophone, a $4.60 chance.

“He’s had two barrier trials and he will improve off having a race,” Ryan said.

“We’d like to get him to the Caulfield Guineas and the plan would be to run him in the Ming Dynasty and then a 1400 metre race at Flemington before the Guineas Prelude.”

Star Of Monsoon’s mother Monsoon Wedding is a sister to champion sire Redoute’s Choice and Ryan says there has already been interest in the colt from studs.

He is one of two spring contenders Ryan trains for Muzaffar Yaseen’s Teeley Assets with Saturday’s Canterbury winner Tango Rain the other.

“Tango Rain is more of a sprinter while Star Of Monsoon is a different type of horse and I think will be better over further than 1200 metres.”

Ryan said Tango Rain had come through his win at Canterbury on Saturday in good order and confirmed the San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 13 as his next goal.

“He’s as good as gold and I’m looking forward to the San Domenico. It is the race I always think starts the spring carnival.

“And I’ve won it twice with Snitzerland (2012) and Zariz (2000).”

Last year’s San Domenico was won by Japonisme from the Ryan-trained King’s Troop with the Chris Waller-trained winner going on to claim the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes during the Melbourne Cup carnival.
