Overnight rain and intermittent drizzle have forced a track downgrade ahead of Rosehill’s Golden Slipper meeting.

“We recorded four millimetres of rain and the track is now a dead five,” racecourse manager Lindsay Murphy said.

“It rained up until about 6am and it’s been overcast all day which has made it difficult for the track to dry.

“The weather has been a nuisance.”

Any upgrade is unlikely until race day because light rain is forecast again on Friday.

The weather bureau says Saturday is likely to be mild with a top of 24 degrees.

A wet track would diminish the chances of Satin Shoes, according to the filly’s jockey Hugh Bowman.

Satin Shoes suffered her only defeat when runner-up on a slow-rated track in the Reisling Stakes at Rosehill on March 19.

“You would think she would be better for the experience going through the soft ground but I’d still prefer it dry,” Bowman said.

“She is is more effective on top of the ground but you can’t control the weather.”

A rain-affected track will enhance the prospects of Satin Shoes’ Reisling conqueror, the John O’Shea-trained Elite Falls.

Elite Falls came from second last in a field of six to overpower Satin Shoes.

On pedigree, few Slipper runners are bred to cope with a wet track better than Elite Falls.

She is by renowned wet track sire More Than Ready from the Danehill mare Niagara Falls, a slow track winner at her second start as a two-year-old.

Elite Falls has a wide gate in 16 but was specked by punters soon after Tuesday’s barrier draw.

Bookmakers are bracing for much stronger support for Elite Falls closer to the race if there is more rain.

Karuta Queen, who fell from favour after her Black Opal Stakes defeat, is adept in rain-affected going.

She led all the way in her 2-3/4-length Magic Millions win on a Gold Coast track rated slow.

TAB Sportsbet has reported $17 to $11 backing for the Queanbeyan-trained filly since Tuesday’s draw.
