Jockey Christian Reith bounced back from a horror meeting at Rosehill on Saturday to win Wednesday’s Cameron Handicap at Newcastle.

Reith tossed the game plan out when dictating from the front to win the 1500m Group Three event on the Gwenda Markwell-trained Rolling Pin.

The victory in the $150,000 feature carried the added bonus of exemption from a ballot for next month’s Epsom Handicap at Randwick.

“I wanted to get cover but he began so well and I let him stride for the first furlong,” Reith said.

“Coming to the corner I gave him a bit of rein and he surged underneath me.

“He found enough to get away from them and they were never going to run the time required to beat him.”

Asked about Rolling Pin running the tough 1600m of the Epsom at Randwick, Reith replied: “I don’t think it will be a problem”.

Reith had something to celebrate on Wednesday having left Rosehill last weekend deflated.

He was rolled on the favourite Nechita in Saturday’s $1 million Golden Rose. The ride also earned him a nine-meeting careless riding suspension.

While Reith was upbeat after the Cameron, not so trainer John O’Shea who was a forlorn figure awaiting the return of Lightinthenite to the runner-up’s stall.

“What do you say, huge run,” O’Shea said.

“There was always a chance he’d end up behind slow horses and that’s what happened. I think I’ll leave it at that.”

Rolling Pin firmed from $18 into $14 while Lightinthenite was solid at $4.20 and the margin between the pair was a half neck on the line.

There was a further length back to Darley’s $31 chance Offenders who was given every chance by jockey Kerrin McEvoy.

Punters ploughed into the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kontiki Park who firmed from $3.80 into a pronounced $3 favourite.

At no stage did Kontiki Park challenge despite the efforts of jockey Nash Rawiller who had earlier teamed with Waterhouse to win aboard Deralon and the extremely impressive Proisir.

“He was a little bit dour today and I don’t think the race was run to suit,” Rawiller said.

“When they quickened they put him straight under pressure but it was a creditable run.”

Waterhouse told Racing NSW stewards, “it has happened before with him” and “the plan was to be where he was comfortable in the run”.

“Perhaps the racing pattern today was against him?” Racing NSW deputy chief steward Greg Rudolph asked.

“It was a pressure race,” Waterhouse replied.

Rudolph was referring to the fact six of the first seven winners on the Newcastle card raced right on the speed.
