Noel Thompson, the holder of one of Australia’s longest standing riding records, has died aged 85.
Thompson rode as an amateur in western Queensland for many decades but is best remembered for his seven winners from seven rides at Cunnamulla on May 6, 1961.
All seven were trained by his close friend Cocky Easton and Thompson’s feat a Queensland record he held jointly with Bill Thomas who set his mark at Townsville in 1929.
In later years Thompson was a member of the Queensland stewards panel and also sat on the Racing Appeals board.
Racing Queensland chief steward Allan Reardon said Thompson had played important roles in Queensland racing after his riding days ended.
