Improving three-year-old Mahis Angel could be a late nomination for the Group One Queensland Derby after his strong win at Ipswich.

Mahis Angel ($7) was too strong at the finish beating Tiponi ($41) by 2-1/2 lengths with a nose to Guise ($1.90) over 2210m.

The gelding is not entered for the G1 Queensland Derby on Saturday week but connections can pay a $15,000 late nomination fee.

A Racing Queensland spokesman confirmed as Mahis Angel had lifted his prize money to $96,000 with the Ipswich win and he would make the Queensland Derby field if nominated.

Trainer Lloyd Kennewell said no decision would be made on Mahis Angel’s next run for a few days.

“We could throw in a late nom for the Derby but we also have the Darwin meeting (in August) in the back of our minds,” he said.

“Mahis Angel has shown plenty of ability and we brought him up here to win better races.

“He is doing well here in Queensland and it might be the making of him.”

Mahis Angel is by Mahisara, who stands at Wattle Brae Stud on the Darling Downs, and is developing a reputation as a sire of stayers.

The win gave Kennewell a race-to-race double as he also won with Poet’s Landing ($3).

“He is in Queensland for much the same reason try to pick up some decent races and we have a bit of an opinion of him as well,” Kennewell said.

The win of Mishani Romance ($21) revived plenty of memories for trainer Les Ross.

“Her mother Cuddlesome was one of the first horses I trained for Mick Crooks,” Ross said.

“She won six races and Mick and I have had a lot of luck since.”
