Queensland trainer Greg Wehlow has been disqualified from training for six months after a horse in his care ‘Island Tang’ returned a positive sample to amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Island Tang who was heavily backed and subsequently won the maiden at Mackay on October has also been disqualified from the race.
Cassandra Marsh was the trainer of Island Tang at the time of the race however the horse was in Wehlow’s care in lead up to the race in which he told Marsh he had been using the banned substances.
“In that time he had regular contact with the gelding which may be responsible for the horse presenting to the races with the prohibited substance,” the stewards report read.
Marsh was fined $5,000 for the incident whilst Wehlow will need to re apply for a training license once his ban has finished along with evidence he has undergone drug rehabilitation.
