Charlie Appleby has ended his first assault on Australian racing with another feature win

English trainer Charlie Appleby has ended his first assault on Australian racing, collecting another feature Cup .

Appleby brought a team of five horses for the Melbourne spring carnival with all bar Second Wave earning a prize money cheque.

Qewy added Saturday’s Sandown Cup to the Godolphin record of Appleby-trained horses.

Ridden by former retained Godolphin rider Kerrin McEvoy, Qewy was sent out the $1.90 favourite before holding off Swacadelic ($6.50) with All I Survey ($31) 3-3/4 lengths away third.

Qewy had earlier won the Geelong Cup and Francis Of Assisi the Bendigo Cup while Scottish finished second to Jameka in last month’s Caulfield Cup.

Other victories were recorded by Oceanographer in the Lexus Stakes at Flemington and Francis Of Assisi in last week’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

In all the five Godolphin runners trained by Appleby started in 10 races, collecting five victories.

Appleby’s travelling foreman James Ferguson said the stable had brought out the right team of horses.

“I couldn’t have asked for me,” Ferguson said.

“For him (Qewy) to go and win this and top it all off makes the whole trip worthwhile.

“He’s put in a great performance and was given a great ride by Kerrin.”

Qewy was backing up into Saturday’s 3200m race after running fourth to Almandin in the Melbourne Cup.

Ferguson said the gelding had a tough run in the Melbourne Cup but enjoyed leading against weaker opposition.

He said he was looking forward to returning to Australia.

“Everyone has worked really hard and hopefully we can come back soon and have a few more winners next time we come back,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said the team was booked to fly home to Newmarket on Wednesday.
