Jockeys will wear black armbands at Doomben as a mark of respect for one of Queensland’s best-known race administrators, John Bell, who has died aged 82.
Dr Bell served on the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club and Brisbane Turf Club from 1974 to 1997.
He was chairman of the BRC from 1994 to 1997.
Dr Bell later was chairman of the Queensland Owners and Breeders Association and served on the board of the Queensland Principal Club (now Racing Queensland) for three years and three years on the Australian Racing Board.
He also served on the equine research committee, the racing industry steering committee and racing industry coordinating committee.
Dr Bell was a professor of pathology at the University of Queensland and director of anatomic pathology at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital.
