Trainer John Moloney says the time is right for lightly-raced Try Pickle to show what he can do as he prepares for his city debut at Caulfield.
Moloney has always liked the rising four-year-old as a stayer and has taken confidence from the Spinning World colt’s impressive win on Geelong’s synthetic track over 1900 metres on July 1.
It was only his fifth race start and his fourth this campaign and Moloney is encouraged ahead of Saturday’s JRA Hcp (2000m).
“He only won a maiden the other day at Geelong but he won it well and his time was relatively good,” Moloney said.
“He was more than a half a second quicker than the other maiden and a full second faster than the 0-62 race the same day so it is pretty positive.”
Dean Yendall rode Try Pickle at Geelong and has stuck with the longshot at Caulfield.
At $51 with TAB Sportsbet, Try Pickle is on the minimum 54kg and Saturday’s test will give Moloney a guide to his future prospects.
“He has got potential for sure and this will tell us if he is going to make it,” Moloney said.
Try Pickle’s only other start over 2000 metres was at Geelong two starts ago when he should have finished much closer than sixth after being trapped three wide for the entire circuit.
“He’s got the pedigree to stay,” Moloney said.
Hong Kong Derby winner Keen Winner, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner and former French Horse of the Year Detroit, who is the dam of another Arc winner and successful sire Carnegie, and champion sire Zabeel are among a long list of winners spotted on Try Pickle’s maternal family.
Mick Kent’s promising three-year-old and $4 favourite You Think So gets his chance to redeem himself on Saturday after seconds at his last two starts at Flemington and Moonee Valley.
He was odds-on at the Valley where he lunged late to go down in a photo-finish to Lopov who is equal $5.50 second favourite with Mr Bisset.
Mr Bisset, trained by Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, is back against his own age after his last-start fourth to Swooper over 2540 metres at Flemington.
