Peter Snowden has reservations that Beaded can defy Hay List a place in history in the Group One Doomben 10,000 but is confident the mare will get her opportunity if the pair clash again in the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap next month.

Hay List is currently at $1.45 for Saturday’s 1350-metre feature and if successful will become the shortest-priced favourite to win in modern times.

Only four horses have won as an outright favourite in the last 20 years – Chief De Beers (1995), Falvelon (2001) and Apache Cat (2008/09).

Falvelon started equal favourite in his second Doomben 10,000 victory in 2002 while last year’s winner Hot Danish was also equal favourite.

In the past 20 years, Apache Cat is the shortest-priced winner at $2.60 when the baldy-faced sprinter was successful in the first of his two victories in 2008.

Snowden is not ruling out Beaded causing an upset but Hay List would need to have a rare off-day.

Hay List’s trainer John McNair will decide after the Doomben 10,000 whether his star sprinter will start in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

“I doubt she can beat Hay List in the 10,000 but she’s that sort of horse you can’t rule her out,” Snowden said.

“I freshened her up after her Adelaide run and she’s trialled well but she’ll be improved by this run.

“But she’s not fully wound up and the two races I’ve identified for her are the Stradbroke and Winter Stakes.

“She’s only small but she gives everything.”

Beaded finished third to Black Caviar and Crystal Lily in the Group One Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 12 before finishing second to Response in the Group One Sportingbet Classic (1200m) at Morphettville two weeks later.

“There was a tactical error made at a vital stage in Adelaide and she went back,” Snowden said.

“She ran out of her skin and only got beaten a neck.

“Hay List is going to be hard to beat and is in career-best form. It’s unfortunate for him that he’s been running into a freak in Black Caviar.”

Beaded came to Brisbane last winter when she won the Group Three BRC Sprint (1350m) last May following her third to Hot Danish in the Group One All-Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

Snowden then sent Beaded into the Stradbroke Handicap in which she finished fourth to Black Piranha before a game third to Melito in the Group One Winter Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm last June.

Beaded carried 51 kilograms in last year’s Stradbroke Handicap and will carry only half a kilogram more in this year’s Group One sprint.

Beaded will also earn a place in the history books if the daughter of Lonhro is successful.

Only five mares – High Benia (1936), Hamurah (1938), Maybe Mahal (1977), Flitter (1994) and Hot Danish last year – have won the Doomben 10,000.
