The Black Caviar show may have taken much of the attention away from the AJC Australian Derby on Saturday but the champion mare’s trainer is one with much at stake in the prestigious Classic.

Peter Moody has some unfinished business in the 2400-metre staying test for three-year-olds at Randwick.

Anacheeva will be out to add to Moody’s Derby record when he takes on Jimmy Choux, New Zealand’s latest champion who created a huge impression with his Rosehill Guineas win.

“This Derby is the only one I haven’t won,” Moody said.

“I’ve won the Victorian Derby, Queensland Derby, South Australian Derby and West Australian Derby.

“If we win I think I’ll take ten to the Northern Territory so I can say I’ve won every Derby on the mainland.

“I don’t even think Bart or TJ have done that.”

Moody-trained horses have come close with Testafiable third to Headturner before winning the 2006 South Australian Derby and Ambitious General second to Fiumicino the following year.

But Moody has a healthy respect for New Zealand Derby winner Jimmy Choux and his trainer John Bary.

“Jimmy Choux is obviously the concern,” he said.

“I have great respect for John Bary and how he has kept the horse up for so long.

“But I can remember New Zealand trainer Dave O’Sullivan saying with the horses that come over here their first run is the best.

“It’s hard to climb the mountain again.

“I hope he’s right. Mine is on an upward spiral and his might be on the way down.”

Anacheeva ran seventh to Jimmy Choux in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Moody believes the extra 400 metres will suit.

“Anacheeva is out of a Zabeel mare and like all of the Zabeel stock he has lacked maturity,” he said.

“But they continually get better and I think he has.”

Jimmy Choux was at $2.05 with TAB Sportsbet on Wednesday with Rosehill Guineas third Shamrocker at $7.50 alongside Retrieve who finished second.

The winner of the Caulfield Guineas last spring, Anacheeva has been unplaced in four starts since and punters have deserted him with $26 on offer in the Derby.

Jimmy Choux has won 10 of his 17 starts and performs on dry and wet ground.

Bary said he believed the colt had improved between the NZ Derby and the Rosehill Guineas and made as much improvement in the past 10 days.

“He has really matured on this trip,” Bary said.

“We’ll go out there and do what we always do.”
