Chris Waller can see no reason why late bloomer Harlem Lady won’t go on with the job after breaking her maiden at Rosehill on Wednesday.
A daughter of legendary sire Zabeel who died on the weekend, the four-year-old finished hard near the inside to take out the TAB More Than Just Winning Hcp (1200m) by a half neck over Shutter Bug.
Waller also supplied the third placegetter, Encosta Line, who was another half head away third.
Having just her second start and first since March, Harlem Lady was unfancied in betting at $19 and Waller said the mare had needed time to physically mature.
“On purpose, we’ve left her alone and as a result she’s an unfinished horse with untapped potential,” Waller said.
“She’s just taken a long time to get to the races, we haven’t held her back.
“When they’re Zabeels, you don’t panic.”
Waller expects the mare to continue to mature with further racing and says he will take her through her grades.
