Jockey Pat Carbery is banking on talent over race experience when he pilots Amelia’s Jewel in Saturday’s MGIB Listed Supremacy Stakes (1000m) at Ascot.
The Simon Miller-trained filly goes to the races for the first time, lining up as warm favourite on debut after impressing trial watchers in her two hit outs.
Carbery, a three-time winner of the Supremacy Stakes previously, says he’s looking forward to seeing how Amelia’s Jewel can perform first-up.
“Obviously she is racing against some horses with more experience on their side, but she has shown us plenty at home and seems to be tracking well,” Carbery said on Tabradio.
“I’m looking forward to seeing her get out there and hopefully does more right then wrong and acquits herself well.”
Amelia’s Jewel has been the backed juvenile in the Supremacy Stakes, her TAB quote tightening from $3.00 to $2.20 after the market opened on Wednesday.
Ahead of her first official assignment, Amelia’s Jewel holds $5.50 favouritism in TAB’s all in Karrakatta Plate market, Perth’s richest race for two-year-olds.
Carbery, who won the Supremacy Stakes aboard Liwa (2021), Petrol Power (2013) and Miss Solis (2012), said Amelia’s Jewel had shown improvement from her first 400m trial to her second when winning over 950m last month.
“I was really happy with her trial,” Carbery said.
“She jumped a lot cleaner and was much better behaved in the barriers.
“When they backed off the pace a fair bit she let down well in the straight.
“She still did a bit wrong, but trialed well.”
Amelia’s Jewel has drawn barrier seven in a field of nine Supremacy runners.
Later in the Furphy Bunbury Cup (2100m), Carbery will look to make it a feature double with True Attraction.
Carbery reunites with the six-year-old after guiding him to a last-start victory in the Detonator Stakes (1800m).
True Attraction, one of four Bunbury Cup runners for trainer Adam Durrant, has displaced Platoon as favourite.
The More Than Ready gelding has firmed to $6 after the TAB trimmed his quote from $8 when the final field of 14 contenders was released.
“I think he will relish the distance and take improvement from his last run too,” Carbery said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him step up again and run well.
“It’s a strong race and very open.”
