Trainer Joe Pride is resigned to starting Stradbroke Handicap first emergency Ladys Angel in Saturday’s June Stakes at Randwick to keep her winter program on track.

The mare, who is in Sydney, would have needed to board a float on Thursday night in order to arrive in Brisbane in time for Saturday’s Group One race.

But with no scratchings from the Stradbroke, coupled with the likelihood of a firm Eagle Farm track, Pride will go to Plan B and start the wet-track specialist at Randwick.

While he could have sent her to Brisbane and sweated on a late withdrawal from the Stradbroke, he would have risked Ladys Angel missing out on a start this weekend.

And that would have thrown a spanner in the works for her major goal – the Group One Winter Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm two weeks from Saturday.

While the Stradbroke (1400m) and June Stakes (1100m) are two very different races, Pride says it has not been a juggle preparing Ladys Angel this week.

“I don’t believe, with most horses, that you need to specifically tune up their work for this race or that,” Pride said.

“Horses are either adept at a distance or they’re not.

“If it’s a wet track on Saturday she will be a chance.

“If it’s dry then she probably won’t quite have the dash to keep up but she will be finishing it off nicely.

“It’s a big class drop too which is important. The June Stakes is a Listed race over 1100 metres and the Stradbroke is a Group One over 1400 metres.

“If she was dropping from a Listed 1400-metre race to a Group One over 1100 it might be different.”

Pride also contemplated running Ladys Angel in the Lactate Pro Hcp at Randwick, run over the Stradbroke trip, but felt she would have received too much weight.

“The June Stakes fits in well for her,” he said.”

Ladys Angel, the $4.60 second favourite with TAB Sportsbet behind Squamosa ($3.20), will be one of two June Stakes runners for Pride along with Geared Up, a $21 outsider.

Pride will also start the enigmatic Electric Dreams in the Fairfax Community Newspapers Hcp (1100m) at Randwick but can’t shed any light on her prospects.

The four-year-old finished fourth in last year’s June Stakes – in which Stradbroke hopeful Love Conquers All beat sprint star Hay List – and was beaten just two lengths in last year’s Listed Sheraco Stakes won by More Joyous.

But her three starts since then have been disappointing.

“She can really produce a run but there is a big difference between her good and bad runs and nothing in between,” Pride said.

“She is unreliable but she’s brilliant on her day.”

Stablemate Trilione will tackle the same race after failing to beat a runner home at Rosehill last Saturday.

Pride believes she didn’t handle the wet track but says she has pulled up well and he’s hopeful she can bounce back.
