Improving Lucky Black has done so well since his win last Saturday, trainer Chris Munce has postponed a brief let-up for the gelding.

Munce pencilled in Lucky Black for a winter carnival campaign after he led all the way at Doomben last week.

It was Lucky Black’s second win in his past three starts and his seventh overall in a career which has been dogged with injury problems.

Lucky Black has accepted for Doomben on Saturday where he will be ridden by Jim Byrne.

Munce said he had intended to give Lucky Black a break after last Saturday and bring him back for the winter sprints.

“He has done so well this week I feel I can get another win out of him and boost his rating further for the winter,” Munce said.

“A final decision will be made on him on Friday night but at this stage I see no reason he should not race.

“It will be a good test for him.”

Lucky Black has a special place for Munce who has worked hard with the gelding in recent months.

“I get a special buzz when he wins because I have had to nurse him through a few problems,” Munce said.

“They served it up to him when he was beaten at his previous start but the 1350 metres suited him at his last start.”

Munce believes Lucky Black could be a chance in races such as the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich late in the winter carnival.

“He might even head down to Grafton for the Ramornie,” Munce said.

Meanwhile, Munce was deflated when his smart two-year-old Nicconi Leggera, a brilliant winner at her only start, drew the outside barrier in a field of 12 in the SQS Haulage Handicap.

“That makes it tougher but she has a stack of pace and a fast horse in Burn Notice drawn directly inside her,” Munce said.
