Trevor Carey admits training for a syndicate of 10 women who race in-form filly Miss Chris, including his wife Jan and many first-time owners, requires diplomatic skills.

“It’s a happy camp at the moment, especially since the filly started winning,” the Wagga trainer said.

“Early on it was fairly hard. You had to be a diplomat.

“My wife understands racing but there are a lot of first-timers in the syndicate. They’re learning the game.

“They all get together for BBQs etcetera and all went out for dinner on Wednesday night.

“It’s nice to win for the girls.”

The three-year-old filly lines up on her home track on Friday chasing a hat-trick of wins in the Riverina Co-Operative Benchmark 55 Hcp (1200m).

Miss Chris, named after breeder Geoff Harrison’s partner and the filly’s part-owner Christine Price, has won her past two starts by a combined total of eight lengths.

According to Carey, Miss Chris has inherited much of her dam Seamore Girl’s galloping ability.

Carey guided Seamore Girl to five wins from 18 starts and Miss Chris is the Rubiton mare’s first foal.

“She’s very similar to her mum, only much sounder,” Carey said.

“Oddly enough, like Seamore Girl, Miss Chris used to miss the kick early, that’s why I put blinkers on her.

“Since the blinkers have gone on she’s living up to the potential she’s always shown.

“Miss Chris is a very contented, relaxed filly, enjoying stable life, and while I think she’s going to be even better next time, we’re pressing on slowly.

“She’s still on an upward trend.

“We’ve got her right at the moment and she certainly hasn’t lost anything since winning last start.

“Her work’s been good. She’s spot-on.”

Miss Chris won her maiden at Wagga on May 27, leading throughout to score by 4-1/2 lengths, then stepped straight up to a Class Two event on the same track on June 4 and again bolted in, this time by 3-1/2 lengths carrying 57kg.

Miss Chris has 59kg on Friday and Carey has engaged two kilogram-claiming apprentice John Kissick.
