Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne has moved a step closer to a training career with her application for a Victorian training license being granted on Thursday night.
Payne who currently has horses in work at Ballarat will now be eligible to race them in her name as well as ride her own horses come race day.
“It’s harder to get sacked (as a rider) if you train them yourself,’’ she said.
After suffering an horrific fall at Mildura Payne is yet to return to the saddle in race conditions but has been riding track work for eight weeks.
She has not given up hope of riding Prince Of Penzance in the 2016 Melbourne Cup although she did say it was unlikely judging on her current fitness levels.
