Robbie Dolan’s first metropolitan winner has also boosted the spirits of the trainer who welcomed the Irish apprentice into his home when he arrived in Australia.

The 22-year-old had a moment to savour at the Canterbury midweek meeting when four-year-old mare Joe’s Joy edged out Base Camp in a tight finish to the TAB Rewards Handicap (1900m).

Dolan relocated in search of opportunities in September, 2016, and started riding a year ago after living with Warwick Farm trainer Richard Litt.

“Richard was the first person to give me somewhere to stay when I came over, so I’m delighted to repay him with a winner,” he said.

Joe’s Joy ($26) pipped Base Camp ($11) by a short half-head to give Litt some consolation after recent acquisition Mackintosh was euthanised after breaking down during last Saturday’s Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

“The ways things have been going I didn’t think we’d won,” Litt said.

“You never like losing a horse and getting a win doesn’t make it any easier.”

At the other end of the experience spectrum, senior jockey Kerrin McEvoy faces an inquiry into his handling of $3.30 favourite Federation placed fourth in the TAB.com.au Handicap (1200m).

Acting chief steward Philip Dingwall was concerned McEvoy did not take the gelding forward when there was an opportunity to sit outside the leader and eventual winner Ms Rodarte.

McEvoy said his instructions were not to kick Federation to the lead.

“Our original plan was not to lead if we couldn’t,” co-trainer Paul Snowden told the inquiry.

“I thought if he did dig the horse we were definitely going into a zone we didn’t want to venture into.”

Dingwall told McEvoy stewards were uncomfortable with the evidence the jockey had provided and adjourned the hearing until co-trainer Peter Snowden could attend and outline his race day instructions.
