Over a century of tradition could be scrapped by Victorian racing authorities who will meet this month to discuss a possible date change of the Melbourne Cup which has traditionally been run on the first Tuesday in November.

Racing officials will consider moving the entire Spring Racing Carnival back a fortnight to gap the carnival from the end of the AFL season which dominates the media and potentially race into late November which is dubbed a “vacant land’ for sport.
The change has been loosely discussed in recent years however the recent discussions of changing the Caulfield Cup to a WFA race have prompted authorities to consider the move.
The move comes to try and distance the racing carnival from the end of the AFL season which in recent years has overshadowed the start of Australia’s biggest racing carnival.
The TAB has reported that the turnover of Flemington’s Turnbull Stakes day which has been moved to the Sunday after the Grand Final has been down for the past two years.
