Jye McNeil showed he is a rising star of the Melbourne jockey ranks at Flemington

Jye McNeil is a rising star of the Melbourne jockey ranks and the in-form hoop has played a leading role on Chester Manifold Stakes day at Flemington.

McNeil’s victory aboard seven-year-old horse Amadeus in the feature race on Saturday’s program – the Listed Chester Manifold – brought up the fourth victory of the day for the 25-year-old jockey.

It is the first time he has achieved that feat in town and it added to an impressive start to 2020 for the jockey who has notched eight winners from the past four city meetings.

“I’ve ridden four winners once before at Echuca,” McNeil said.

“There’s a lot more prestige doing it here today at Flemington.”

McNeil’s haul at Flemington took him to fourth in this season’s Melbourne jockeys’ premiership with 24 wins, three behind leader Craig Williams, while he leads the state premiership.

The Mick Kent-trained Amadeus was well-backed leading into the Chester Manifold to claim his first stakes victory and McNeil had him positioned outside leader Call It A Day who kicked strongly rounding the home turn.

Amadeus ($3.60) warmed to his task at the business end and hit the lead inside the final 100m before beating Guizot by a length with Call It A Day holding on for third, another long head away.

McNeil said he was not always confident of picking up the leader.

“He seemed to labour around the turn but I didn’t rush him,” McNeil said.

“I just took my time and I didn’t chase too early and he was very good over the final stages.”

McNeil’s day was soured, however, when stewards found him guilty of careless riding near the 1000m mark on Amadeus, saying he tightened Regan Bayliss’s mount Bumper Blast for room between two runners.

McNeil will consider appealing the eight-meeting penalty which is to be served after he completes a nine-meeting ban incurred at Sandown on Wednesday.

The jockey knew he had a strong book of rides on paper and he started the program with wins in three of the first four races aboard two-year-old Jabali Ridge, promising three-year-old filly Rubisaki and progressive gelding Blazejowski.

“I was just hopeful that they all ran up to their form,” McNeil said.

“I’ve got a suspension starting tonight. That will probably slow me down a little bit but things are going along really nicely.”

While McNeil took riding honours, trainer Patrick Payne prepared a winning treble with Rubisaki, Modear and Power Dream.
