Victorian three-year-old Magicool has outstayed his rivals to win the $600,000 Queensland Derby at Doomben.
Covering ground for the entire 2200m, Magicool launched his bid for James Winks as the widest runner on the turn and the Mark Kavanagh-trained gelding kept lifting to beat the New Zealander Werther.
Jumbo Prince took the minor placing, just ahead of Sadler’s Lake who worked hard to find the lead after being trapped wide.
Magicool was lining up in his third Classic for the season after finishing fifth in the Victoria Derby and fourth in last month’s South Australian Derby.
A son of Fastnet Rock, Magicool has now won five races and more than $660,000 in prize money.
Werther was rated unlucky. The kiwi was held up midfield on the rails and couldn’t get any momentum along the inside until late in the race.
