Speedy filly Love Spy gets a chance to prove her debut winning margin was no fluke when she lines up at the Sunshine Coast.
She tackles Saturday’s $125,000 Sunshine Coast 2YO Classic (1200m) which features three horses chasing a Magic Millions bonus.
The Natalie McCall-trained Par Oneri and Heart Skipt A Beat from the Liam Birchley stable were emergencies for last Saturday’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic while the Stuart Kendrick-trained Rare Occurrence finished 11th.
All three are eligible for a $50,000 special conditions bonus as final acceptors for the Magic Millions.
Love Spy, a daughter of first season sire and former star sprinter Love Conquers All, won her first start by 5-1/2 lengths at Toowoomba on New Year’s Eve.
However, that race was marred by interference when two horses lost their jockeys and several others were caught in the backwash.
Love Spy was leading at the time and missed the trouble behind her.
However, the winning margin is the last thing on trainer Ben Currie’s mind as he hopes he has something special in Love Spy.
“We will know where we are going after the Sunshine Coast race. The race is worth a good deal of money and her first win was also worth good prize money,” Currie said.
“I think we will probably give her a break after Saturday and see if we might have a winter horse.”
Love Spy’s Toowoomba win was over 1050m but Currie is confident the filly will run out a strong 1200m on Saturday.
“She led in her trial win and also in her Toowoomba race. But I don’t think she has to lead. I will leave it up to Jim (jockey Byrne),” he said.
“Love Spy has drawn barrier 10 and that shouldn’t be too bad at the Sunshine Coast.”
Byrne will also ride the Currie-trained Cantbuybetter in the benchmark 90 (1800m).
Currie has been keen to try Cantbuybetter, a last-start fourth in a 1600m race at the Sunshine Coast, over more ground.
Apprentice Luke Dittman will have a good book of rides for the day including Currie’s other runner Honey Toast who has not raced since winning the Townsville Cup in September.
