The old firm of trainer David Payne and jockey Jeff Lloyd will reunite on Saturday when Latin News runs at Eagle Farm.

Both former South Africans, Lloyd did the bulk of Payne’s riding when he was based in Sydney several seasons ago.

Among their successes were Group wins with 2008 Chelmsford Stakes and Breeders Classic winner Gallant Tess and Hurried Choice who won that year’s Theo Marks Stakes.

Lloyd left Sydney in early 2009 to take up an opportunity in Hong Kong and when he returned to Australia earlier this year it was to Brisbane where he is stable rider for Patinack Farm.

Payne can’t recall Lloyd having a ride for him since he left Sydney 3-1/2 years ago but the pair look set to strike an immediate blow when they reunite on Saturday.

Latin News is a dominant $1.95 favourite for the Retailquip Open Handicap (1000m) after the Sydney-based Payne elected to send him north in search of a winnable race.

“It’s a bit tough for him down here at the moment because he’s not a top horse, he’s a benchmark horse and this race looks a bit easier,” Payne said.

“He’s getting older but he’s always thereabouts. He’s not always a winner but he’s always around the money.”

Latin News has won three of his 27 starts but tellingly, all his victories have come first-up from a spell.

He will be striving to enhance that record at Eagle Farm where he will be having his first run since he finished seventh in Listed company during the Scone carnival in May.

Since being transferred to Payne from Bart Cummings, Latin News has had three of his nine starts in Queensland notching two stakes placings.

Saturday’s sprint is a drop in grade and the six-year-old has an ideal draw in two.

His nine rivals include last start victor Carry To Fortune and multiple stakeswinner The Jackal who will continue his comeback from injury.

The Paul St Vincent-trained 10-year-old was having his first run in 18 months when he finished an encouraging fourth to Carry To Fortune at Eagle Farm three weeks ago.

While the Payne-Lloyd combination will team up for the first time in a long time at Eagle Farm, they could be in for a quick back-up seven days later in Sydney.

With Glyn Schofield suspended at Canterbury on Wednesday, Payne has offered Lloyd the ride on Centennial Park in the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes.
