Paul Perry is confident The Getaway will hold his own against Brisbane-bound rivals

The Getaway faces a familiar scenario in the Listed McKell Cup at Randwick, and trainer Paul Perry is confident his the stayer will hold his own against Brisbane-bound rivals.

Newcastle-based Perry has no pretensions about the four-year-old gelding joining the northerly drift to the Queensland winter carnival, yet he still expects The Getaway to prove competitive in Saturday’s McKell Cup over 2400m.

A Rosehill win last Saturday ensured The Getaway would be given his chance in the McKell Cup.

The Getaway is no stranger to quick turnarounds, one of which culminated in his only Listed placing in last year’s Wyong Gold Cup (2100m).

“It shouldn’t worry him, he’s done alright through the week,” Perry said.

The Getaway was a $12 chance with the TAB on Thursday,

The Kim Waugh-trained Our Century, who is looking to book a trip to Doomben for the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2200m) on June 9, led the market at $3.50.

“The field seems a little bit up on the other day but he’ll handle that,” Perry said.

The Getaway drew barrier two in the field of 10 with apprentice Jean Van Overmeire to ride.

“He’ll get back a bit and being drawn in always helps doesn’t it?” Perry said.

Perry also saddles up three-year-old filly Miss Imagination ($15) in the McCarthy Homes Handicap (1200m) following a first-up seventh in the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone.

His primary focus is Doomben where in-form colt Perast strives to back-up his win in the Listed Queensland Day Stakes (1350m) on May 12 in the Group Three Fred Best Classic (1350m).

The winner gains an exemption for the Group One Stradbroke Handicap over the same trip on June 9, and Perry was confident the $4.80 second elect would thrive.

“It’s the same sort of conditions and we’re very happy with him,” he said.

Stablemate The Mission ($11) drops back in grade for the Fred Best Classic after running 10th in the Group One Doomben 10,000.
