Former Perth galloper Vega Magic has taken out the $1 million Group One Goodwood at Morphettville at his first start for Lindsay Park.
The victory completed a red-letter day for Lindsay Park, which collected four winners at Flemington on Saturday as well as a double at Morphettville with Fuhryk winning the Group Three Proud Miss Stakes.
Ridden by Craig Williams, Vega Magic ($4.80) was heavily supported at William Hill before scoring a three-quarter length win from Missrock ($31) with Casino Wizzard ($61) in third place.
The $4 favourite Black Heart Bart, aiming for successive Goodwood victories, finished seventh.
Lindsay Park’s only previous win in the Goodwood came in 1971, with the Colin Hayes trained Romantic Son.
Senior Lindsay Park trainer David Hayes said the stable was confident Vega Magic would take beating in Saturday’s 1200m sprint.
“He trialled very, very well and we were confident going into the race,” Hayes told Racing Central.
“He had a lot of the Redkirk Warrior’s about him before he won the Newmarket Handicap.
“He’s a big athletic horse that arrived over from Perth in great order.”
Hayes, who trains in partnership with son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, said Vega Magic would be given a break before preparing for a spring campaign – which could include The Everest, at Randwick in October.
“He could be an ideal horse for The Everest,” Hayes said.
“Someone may have a ticket they might like to share.”
Vega Magic also completed a successful day for Williams who had earlier wins aboard I’ll Have A Bit in the Group Three National Stakes and Exocet in the Listed Centaurea Stakes, as well as combining with Lindsay Park on Fuhryk.
Williams said he was fortunate to be associated with Vega Magic.
“It has been a great training effort by the team,” Williams said.
“They are very professional in what they do and they have a very exciting horse.”
