Three multiple Group One-winning trainers combined to win all seven races at Canterbury in a strong showing on the verge of spring.

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller and his closest rival in last year’s metropolitan premiership, John O’Shea, flexed their muscles at Wednesday’s meeting with a treble and double respectively.

Randwick trainer John Thompson chimed in with two wins of his own.

Waller kicked off the day in style, winning the first two races with Wu Gok and Sezanne.

Sezanne, the $2.10 favourite in the 1200m race for three-year-olds, kicked clear at the 200m mark to win strongly from the Hawkes Racing Team-trained Military Machine ($12) who flew home late for an eye-catching second.

Jockey Jason Collett said there was plenty of improvement to come from Sezanne.

“She should be in for a pretty good spring,” he said.

Wu Gok had his first win at his third start in the three-year-old 1550m maiden handicap.

Despite two unplaced efforts in provincial grade in July, Wu Gok was backed from $21 to $15 before the race and won strongly.

“Over the next few weeks or months as these two-year-olds turn three and they get over more suitable distances you’ll see the form change a little bit,” Waller said.

The stable treble was completed by former New Zealander Antonio Guiseppe winning his first race in Australia at his second attempt.

Waller said Sezanne and Wu Gok would be aimed at a Saturday race at Rosehill in 2-1/2 weeks, while he plans to run Antonio Giuseppe on the same day over 1500m.

Jockey Blake Shinn said Nieta was heading the right way to earning black-type after the John Thompson-trained mare shot up the rails to win an 1100m benchmark race.

The stable’s other winner Signposted won his third race in a row and second on the trot at Canterbury over 1900m.

Precautions and Chetwood gave Godolphin a race-to-race double.

Chetwood’s first-up win in the 1250m benchmark 72 handicap was apprentice jockey Andrew Adkins 20th city winner meaning he now has a two-kilogram claim at city meetings.

O’Shea said Chetwood had come back stronger as a four-year-old and will tackle now stronger races.

The gelding defeated Cannyescent who was gallant first-up on a heavy track.

Cannyescent’s jockey Glyn Schofield said it was a good effort and there was room for improvement for the Gabrielle Englebrecht-trained gelding who is looking to tackle stakes races through the spring.
