The only foal out of the late Typhoon Tracy will get a chance to press his South Australian Derby claims when he runs at Sandown.

Three-year-old Last Typhoon, out of the 2009-10 Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy who died after giving birth to the colt in 2012, lines up in Wednesday’s Polytack Handicap (2100m).

Last Typhoon did his earlier racing under the care of Peter Moody who trained the multiple Group One-winning mare Typhoon Tracy.

Moody shut his stable after beginning a six-month suspension last month and Last Typhoon finished 12th in a 2000m race against his own age at Caulfield on March 26 in his first start for new trainer Robert Smerdon.

Smerdon said he couldn’t really get a line through the colt’s first run for his stable because he was tightened for room at the 250m mark.

Last Typhoon, who has two wins from eight starts, broke his maiden at Bairnsdale over 2000m in October and won over the same distance at Donald two starts ago on March 4.

He was down to run over 2000m at Wangaratta last Thursday but that meeting was abandoned.

“So he runs tomorrow with a view to going to Adelaide ten days later then the Derby beyond that,” Smerdon said.

The South Australian Derby (2500m) is on May 14.

The Smerdon-trained five-year-old Grand Dreamer is the favourite for Wednesday’s race.
