Darley head jockey Kerrin McEvoy is battling a bout of `flu but has declared his fitness to fulfil commitments at the Queensland Oaks meeting at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

McEvoy was due to travel to Brisbane to ride the Darley team trackwork on Tuesday ahead of his first appearance at the Brisbane winter carnival this year.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t make it up to Brisbane for trackwork because I’ve had a bad head and chest cold,” McEvoy said.

“I’ve got a couple of rides at Canterbury tomorrow but I don’t know if I’ll be there at this stage.

“It’s left me feeling a bit flat but I’ll be right for Saturday and I’ll probably go up to Brisbane on Saturday morning.”

McEvoy made a triumphant comeback with a winner at Randwick last Saturday after being sidelined for a month with broken ribs suffered in a Sydney Cup fall last month.

The injury cost him wins aboard the Darley-trained Benfica (Listed Hampden Stakes), Free Wheeling (Group Two Champagne Stakes), Divorces (Listed Gold Coast Bracelet), Kanzan (Group Three Glenlogan Park Stakes) and Beaded in last Saturday’s Group One Doomben 10,000.

Trainer Peter Snowden is delighted with how his Queensland Oaks chance Divorces has come on since her third to Kiwi filly Scarlett Lady in the Group Three The Roses (2020m) on May 21.

“I’m really happy the way she’s going and she looks in great order,” Snowden said.

“She definitely hasn’t gone backward since The Roses.”

Jockey Hugh Bowman reported Divorces didn’t settle when she raced in a forward position in The Roses.

“She raced closer to the speed in Brisbane last run and didn’t relax,” Snowden said.

“It won’t matter where she draws she’ll get back and hopefully she can go to sleep.

“Hugh (Bowman) is confident she’ll get the trip if ridden that way.”

McEvoy, who is chasing his second Queensland Oaks after winning on the Snowden-trained Purple in 2009, is also confident Divorces will see out the 2400-metre journey.
“It’s a concern whether she’ll run the trip but I’m confident she can if she’s ridden quiet,” McEvoy said.

McEvoy’s illness has forced Snowden to delay choosing his riders for his Group Two BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes hopes Benfica and Free Wheeling until after Wednesday’s acceptances.

The Darley pair is both heading to the Group One TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week – the fifth and final Group One race for two-year-olds this season.

The Darley team is chasing a clean sweep after wins in the first four – the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper with Sepoy and the AJC Sires’ Produce and Champagne Stakes with Helmet.

McEvoy said it would be a “team decision” to choose his Sires’ ride.

“Benfica ran quicker time last start but Free Wheeling ran the faster sectionals of the two,” McEvoy said.

“It’ll be a tough decision and a lineball call whichever way it goes.”
