Trainer Kelso Wood has a million reasons to break his normal pattern of racing with Zero Rock.

Zero Rock is on the borderline of making the field for the $1 million Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week and is also nominated for the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at the same track this Saturday.

Wood normally doesn’t like to back up Zero Rock in her races but to have a Stradbroke runner is a good enough reason to change his routine with the five-year-old mare.

“She’s close to getting into the Stradbroke and we’ll know after Saturday whether she will make it,” Wood said.

“She’s running in the Dane Ripper on Saturday and I normally wouldn’t back her up a week later but it is a Stradbroke.”

Wood was rapt with Zero Rock’s second to Kanzan in the Group Three Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on May 21.

“It was a great run and she’s worked well since,” he said.

Wood gained added confidence from jockey Chris Munce to push on to the Stradbroke after he declared Zero Rock would have beaten Kanzan had she drawn a better barrier.

The daughter of Danzero was always wide in the Glenlogan but was beaten only a long neck.

“She was never closer than three deep after starting from barrier 15,” Munce said.

Meanwhile, trainer Anthony Cummings is pushing ahead with his plan to run Shadows In The Sun in the Group One Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

The three-year-old raced in a forward position last start in the Group One Doomben Cup on May 21 before fading to beat just one runner home in the race won by Scenic Shot.

Cummings has reported the gelding subsequently pulled up sore in the near-hind leg.

Racing Queensland stewards said Cummings would provide a full veterinary certificate of fitness prior to the Queensland Derby.

Shadows In The Sun previously won the Group One South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 8.

The winner of three races from 19 starts, Shadows In The Sun is a $21 chance in latest Queensland Derby markets with TAB Sportsbet.

The Graeme Rogerson-trained Shootoff, who finished fourth in the Doomben Cup, is the $4.80 favourite with Saturday’s Queensland Oaks favourite and stablemate Scarlett Lady next at $6.50.
