It’s always an honour to get a race named after you, and even more so to win it.
Ageless veteran jockey Robert Thompson has the chance for all that at Newcastle this afternoon.
As does Newcastle trainer, Paul Perry.
Both men have races named after them. The $40,000 Robert Thompson Cup is the main race today, on at 5:30pm and run over 1200mn.
Old Thommo rides JOEY’S CHANCE (Excelerbration-Rosa’s Joy) who is a real live chance following his stunning win last start at Warren in a very strong Class 3 that included the smart Farmer’s Friend.
He ran very fast time and came home with a wet sail. A repeat here and he goes very close.
As for trainer Perry, he saddles a last start winner also in COOL WORLD (Rubick-Matilda’s Dance) in race 7, the Paul Perry BM 68 Hcp over 1400m on at 4:50pm.
Similarly to Joey’s Chance, he sat back and charged home to win, this bloke doing it at this track last start in a BM 64 so must also be strongly fancied.
Both Paul Perry and Robert Thompson have been icons to the sport in the Hunter regions for decades now and both deserve to win races named after them.
