Star New Zealand three-year-old Jimmy Choux will be given a solid hitout on Tuesday ahead of his bid for a first Australian Group One victory in the Rosehill Guineas.

The colt will have two starts in Sydney, Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick two weeks later.

“He will have a gallop over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm in the morning just to make sure everything is right for the Guineas,” trainer John Bary said.

Although Bary was emphatic immediately after Jimmy Choux won the New Zealand Derby it would be his last start over 2400 metres, a study of the weights for the Doncaster Mile changed his mind.

“He is not that well weighted against horses like More Joyous and Danleigh in the Doncaster,” Bary said.

“We had a rethink and ruled out the Doncaster and decided on the Guineas and the Derby instead.

“It seems like a weaker crop of three-year-olds and the best option.

“Besides, he can do anything, he is a freak.”

The “freak” has won nine of his 16 starts, five on wet ground including the Derby which was on a heavy 10 at Ellerslie.

“He goes on anything so it doesn’t worry me if it stays wet, his two Group Ones have been on heavy tracks,” Bary said.

Jimmy Choux’s jockey Jonathan Riddell is spending the week in Sydney preparing for the Guineas.

A champion jumps jockey in New Zealand, Riddell has won three Grand National Steeplechases and two Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton.

He decided to give flat racing another chance and has worked hard to maintain his weight at 56kg.

Riddell has ridden Jimmy Choux at 14 of his 16 starts and has eight wins on the colt.

Bary has flagged the possibility of a trip to Royal Ascot for Jimmy Choux for the Queen Anne Stakes (1600m).

“He is a colt so for his breeding future it would be great to travel overseas with him,” he said.

“I’ve had talks with their representative but we’ll wait and see what happens here first.”

There were 20 entries for the Guineas including last-start Australian Guineas winner Shamrocker who was also nominated for the South Australian Oaks.

Victoria Derby runner-up Praecido will be one of two runners for trainer David Payne with Masquerader the other.
