A rousing gallop on the Doomben course proper has the Godolphin camp growing in confidence about Impending winning his third stakes race in Queensland.
Impending will be third-up in the Group One Kingsford-Smith Cup (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.
And Godolphin’s head trainer James Cummings said he could not be happier with Impending.
“He’s having a terrific campaign. He’s tightened up nicely since the Doomben 10,000 but still looks strong and he’s muscled up beautifully,” Cummings said.
“I think that the extra 150 metres will allow the horse to travel into the race more strongly.”
Cummings said Impending galloped in style on the course proper at Doomben on Tuesday morning.
“He let down beautifully in his work and I think he really enjoyed the speed he was able to gallop at on the grass,” Cummings said.
“He hit the line well but was still very well held together in the style of a horse who’s in the best form of his career.”
Stud-bound Impending heads a big day for Godolphin which will have eight runners in six races.
Godolphin will also be represented by It’s Somewhat, Duca Valentinos and Spectroscope in the Lord Mayor’s Cup, Interlocutor in the Premier’s Cup, Dynamited in the BRC Sires’ Produce) Stakes, Marsupial in the Fred Best Classic and Ghisoni in the Glenlogan Park Stakes.
Impending won the Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben last year and finished third behind Redzel and Terravista in the Darley Clasic in the spring.
First-up this campaign he won the Group Two Victory Stakes on April 28 before a fast-finishing second to English in the Group One Doomben 10,000 two weeks ago.
It’s Somewhat missed last week’s Doomben Cup with a slight temperature but he has recovered well.
“We have gone for blinkers on him because we think he might need something to kick him into gear,” Cummings said.
The promising Dynamited will wear winkers for the first time in the Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Cummings said Marsupial was not suited at the weights in the Fred Best but was fit and racing well while Ghisoni was holding her condition for the Glenlogan Park.
