Hay List’s half-brother Sound Of The Ocean made a winning debut at a low-key Gosford meeting on Thursday.
The three-year-old son of Delzao let down strongly along the inside at the end of the Schweppes Maiden Handicap to get up in the final stride of the 1100-metre contest.
Sound Of The Ocean is trained by John McNair who also prepares older half-brother Hay List who has emerged as a sprinting star.
The winner of two Group Ones, Hay List has also finished second in another three majors behind champion mare Black Caviar this season.
Ridden by Diego Lima, Sound Of The Ocean ($6.50) was a touch slowly away before settling into a midfield position on the fence.
It appeared a minor placing was likely for much of the straight until Sound Of The Ocean picked up along the inside as the leader began to slow, and the gelding arrived just in time to get the result by a short head.
Hay List, a son of Statue Of Liberty, hasn’t raced since his second to Black Caviar in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) in Brisbane on May 14.
He was set to be the short-priced favourite in the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) two weeks later but was scratched on race eve due to a leg infection.
