Most Important took out the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes at Doomben

Trainer Tony Gollan was still at a loss to explain Most Important’s poor spring form in Melbourne after the gelding gave him back-to-back wins in the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes at Doomben.

Gollan equalled his best training performance when Most Important ($5) gave him his fourth winner for the day.

He had earlier won with I’m A Rippa, Ef Troop and Outback Barbie, giving him four metropolitan winners for the third time in his career.

Most Important hit the lead at the 250m and went on to beat Torgersen ($13) by 1-1/4 lengths.

The win gave Gollan wins in the Lough Neagh three years in a row.

Most Important won the Lough Neagh Stakes last year as the middle leg of the Brisbane summer treble that earned him $500,000 bonus.

He then went on to be unplaced in the Magic Millions Cup and Gollan rested him for a spring carnival campaign in Melbourne.

But that was a disaster with Most Important running last at both his starts at Caulfie.d

“He was awful in Melbourne and I really don’t know why. But we got him home and gave him a few days on the water walker and a rest and he has come back to his best,” Gollan said.

“I was really confident today because I thought he would get the right run and that’s how it turned out.”

Most Important is now headed to the Magic Millions Cup and Gollan thinks he can go close to winning.

“I have a lot more petrol in the tank with him now so I would expect him to be hard to beat,” Gollan said.

Most Important is raced by Linda Huddy who is one of Gollan’s biggest clients and he has won more than $700,000 in prize money plus the $500,000 bonus.

Winning jockey Michael Cahill said Torgersen would have been hard to beat had he drawn a better barrier.

“I would have been a bit closer on the hometurn. He will be hard to beat at 1600m next time,” Cahill said.
