Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign will run in the $10 million dollar The Everest.
She Will Reign’s owners have agreed to a prize money split with race slot holder Yulong Investments, which will return them more prize money than her Golden Slipper win should she win the Everest.
Darby said connections and Yu Long had come to an agreement on a prize money split with the filly to race in the Darby Racing silks and Yu Long to retain the trophy if she wins.
The Chinese company started by businessman Yuesheng Zhang has made a heavy investment in Australian racing and breeding over the past couple of years with a property in Victoria and racehorses with several prominent trainers.
The Gary Portelli-trained She Will Reign has gone for a spell and with the plan to run first-up in the Moir Stakes in September.
Gary Portelli was excited about targeting the race with his stable star telling Fairfax Media that the idea of buying a slot was discussed.
“We had looked at possibly buying a slot but it was too big of a gamble. This way we have a spot in the race and have some certainty where we are going in the spring.”
“She is out spelling and everything points towards that race at Randwick in October.”
Portelli will however need to find a new jockey with the filly to carry just 50.5kg in the race, a weight regular jockey Ben Melham can’t make.
The slots for The Everest cost $1.8 million for a three-year term with She Will Reign the first horse to be confirmed for the race.
