Glenlogan Park manager Steve Morley hopes the government takes note of the stud’s decision to scale back its operation and no longer stand stallions.

Glenlogan is the biggest stud in Queensland and has been a major player in Australian yearling sales.

Four of the stud’s sires will be relocated while its two senior stallions will go into retirement.

Real Saga goes to Eureka, Rothesay to Lyndhurst and Jet Spur to Grandview, all in Queensland while Rich Enuff will head to Woodside in Victoria.

Veterans Show A Heart and Falvelon will remain at Glenlogan to see out their days.

Glenlogan will maintain a band of about 35 broodmares while the 200 other broodmares owned by people outside Glenlogan will be moved to other studs.

“We have been working on scaling back our operation for some time. We will continue to send our broodmares to Queensland studs but also to concentrate more on Hunter Valley stallions such as Snitzel etcetera,” Morley said.

“We also hope to concentrate more on national sales such as the Magic Millions January sales and the Sydney Easter sales.”

“We have done deals with Eureka, Lyndhurst and Grandview to keep shares in the sires.”

Morley said stallion and broodmare numbers in Queensland had dropped dramatically in the past decade.

“Broodmare numbers are down about 66 per cent and stallions to 122 from 195 in 2007,” he said.

“It is one of the things the government needs to address.”

Morley said Glenlogan had contributed about $10 million to the local Beaudesert economy when it was at its zenith with 50 staff.

It would now employ only five or six workers.

“In NSW and Victoria the governments do not have as much to do with running racing as here,” Morley said.

“You get a change in government here and things change in racing.”

Morley said he would love to see racing in Queensland run by racing people for racing people.

“At the moment it is like a yo yo,” he said.
