An explosive sprint in the Flight Stakes has propelled First Seal to the top of Australia’s three-year-old fillies’ ranks.
Leaving her rivals without excuse, First Seal defeated Winx by three lengths in the 1600-metre Group One race at Randwick.
“She showed us from day one she was very good,” trainer John Thompson said.
Starting favourite, First Seal ($2.30) was given a perfect run by Blake Shinn while second pick Winx ($2.70) had to go back to the tail of the field from a wide draw.
Shinn took First Seal to the lead at the 250m and she continued to extend her margin.
Winx couldn’t match the winner’s acceleration while Victorian filly Thinking Of You ($6) wound up 1-3/4 lengths away third.
“She’s got great presence about her, an unbelievable motor and she just puts it out on to the track,” Shinn said about the winner.
“It’s great to win a Group One race for John … it’s been a while coming.”
